Hospitals’ contribution to their communities extends far beyond their role as health care providers. They also serve as economic engines, the largest employers in many regions.
Hospitals are among the top sources of private-sector jobs: California’s 454 hospitals employ nearly 500,000 people, and by extension support more than 1.1 million jobs in total.
Last year, these hospitals spent $128 billion on goods and services from other businesses — not only in their communities — but elsewhere in the state and beyond. This activity is an economic boon for California, supporting millions of other jobs and $286 billion in total state economic activity.
