DHCS Updates 2021-22 DRG Pricing Calculators

The Department of Health Care Services has updated the state fiscal year (SFY) 2021-22 Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) pricing calculators to correct an error on reference tab “5-Policy Adjustors.” 

Correction Requests for Medicare Hospital FFY 2026 Wage Index, Occupational Mix Revised Data Due Feb. 18

What’s happening: CHA DataSuite issued a hospital-specific analysis of the Medicare hospital federal fiscal year (FFY) 2026 wage index and occupational mix revised data — and it is imperative that hospitals review these data, as they have until Feb. 18 to submit requests for either error corrections or revisions. 

What else to know: The data analyzed is revised and is the second of three wage and occupational mix data public use files (PUFs) that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued to develop the hospital wage index for FFY 2026.

Certain 340B Hospitals to Receive Lump-Sum Settlement

What’s happening: A final rule from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) contains a remedy for the agency’s 340B-acquired drug payment policy that was in effect from 2018 to 2022. 

What else to know: Eligible hospitals will receive a lump-sum settlement for claims, including beneficiary cost sharing, as a result of CMS’ invalidated policy that reduced payments for separately payable outpatient drugs acquired under the 340B program.

November of this new year will mark the 20th anniversary of To Err Is Human, the first of two landmark Institute of Medicine reports castigating the nation’s hospitals and physicians for unnecessary lapses in safety and quality. 

The initial book-length study estimated medical errors claimed 98,000 lives a year. The second, Crossing the Quality Chasm, laid out a detailed road map for providers to improve the quality of care.

After nearly two decades of concerted efforts, it’s time for the National Academies to judge whether quality and safety have improved and where new work is needed most.

Much progress has been made in patient safety — between 2009 and 2019, the annual number of errors serious enough to warrant monetary penalties from the California Department of Public Health declined 27% — but more can be done. In recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 8-14, the Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) and CHPSO will offer five free webinars focused on improving the safety of the health care system and recognizing the work that’s being done.
