After knocking on many doors, Children’s Hospital Oakland finally opened theirs for Ella Mae Ferneil. She went on to become the first African American registered nurse, public health nurse, visiting nurse, and school nurse in the state of California, and Children’s Hospital Oakland is proud to honor this remarkable and determined woman.
