CMS Approves Hospital Fee Program Managed Care Rates

On Monday, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) shared four approval letters, dated May 18 and May 26, from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The approved rates include  only the Hospital Fee Program for Jan. 1-June 30, 2017. DHCS is still waiting on CMS’ approval of rates for state fiscal years 2017-18 and  2018-19.

Sharp Grossmont Hospital Volunteer Manager Receives National Award

Volunteer Manager Linda Van Fulpen, CAVS, has been awarded the 2019 Retail Excellence Program Award from the Association for Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals (AHVRP), a professional member group of the American Hospital Association, for her efforts organizing and running a 10,000-square-foot thrift store to benefit Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa and its patients.

The thrift store, called the Thrift Korral, opened in 1992. It currently has three employees and more than 70 volunteers. All proceeds from the store go to the Grossmont Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary which has contributed more than $3.5 million to the hospital and Sharp HospiceCare.

DHCS Takes Steps to Expedite Access to Enhanced Care Management

What’s happening: Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Medi-Cal managed care plans (MCPs) must implement presumptive authorization arrangement with select providers of enhanced care management (ECM). 

What else to know: The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is releasing updates to the ECM presumptive authorization policy parallel to the ECM Referral Standards that, together, are designed to ease the administrative burden of the referral and authorization process on ECM providers and community referral partners.

DHCS Receives Federal Approval of the Managed Care Organization Tax

What’s happening: On Dec. 15, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) received federal approval of the managed care organization tax reauthorized in the 2023-24 budget.   

What else to know: The MCO tax is expected to generate nearly $5 billion annually in net revenue to the state.

This session outlines how the the city’s mass fatality management plans were quickly overwhelmed, and reviews how hospital quickly adapted to increase mortuary space, redeploy staff, and work closely with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to manage body collection points and long-term storage. The session also outlined the various logistical challenges faced by hospitals and emphasized the need for improved coordination, enhanced hospital preparedness, and updates to fatality management plans for future emergencies.
