CHA FAQs Detail AB 2975 Hospital Weapon Detection Requirements

What’s happening: Following numerous questions about Assembly Bill (AB) 2975’s requirements, CHA has developed a frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) fact sheet to assist hospitals with planning for implementation.  

What else to know: AB 2975 will require all hospitals to adopt and implement a weapon detection policy — and screen at certain entrances for instruments capable of causing death or serious bodily injury — by sometime around March 2027.

How can a hospital get a waiver of nurse-staffing ratios?

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is now offering an expedited option for hospitals to flex the nurse staffing ratios. This process, which took effect immediately with the release of All-Facilities Letter 20-26.4, means hospitals can use certain alternative measures as soon as they submit the waiver request form.

What do I do if my hospital is running out of space in the morgue?

You can try to lease appropriate storage space, although it is in short supply in many parts of the state. You can also call your county coroner or medical examiner. The county coroner or medical examiner has the ability to request help from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services if necessary. (4/9)

Can funeral homes/mortuaries refuse to accept the bodies of those who died of COVID-19?

The existing state and federal guidance does not support funeral homes, mortuaries, or death care workers refusing to accept the bodies of those who died of COVID-19. CHA Updates Health Care Minimum Wage FAQs

What’s happening: The new health care worker minimum wage officially took effect Oct. 16, and CHA has updated its frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) fact sheet to reflect changes to both the implementation date and clarifying changes made to the law.   

What else to know: When Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 525 in 2023, it established graduated minimum wage increases for certain health care workers. Then, two bills in 2024 — SB 828 and SB 159 — delayed implementation of the new wage increase from June 1 to a newly established and final deadline of Oct. 16.
