The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has issued new frequently asked questions (FAQs) to address stakeholder questions about the information blocking regulations.
Surgeon General Releases Call to Action on National Suicide Prevention Strategy
Many Americans are indicating increased mental health concerns resulting from economic hardship and social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. On Jan. 19, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of the Surgeon General — in collaboration with the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention — released The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Implement the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, a report that outlines the steps for reducing suicide rates and helping improve resilience. Its goal is to broaden perceptions of suicide, who is affected, and the many factors that can affect suicide risk.
CMS Updates Substance Use Disorder Data Book
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has updated its Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Data Book for Congress, as required by the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment Act. The data book uses 2018 Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System data.
CDPH Requests Information From SNFs on Interdisciplinary Team Needs
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued All Facilities Letter (AFL) 21-06, which requests that skilled-nursing facilities (SNFs) respond to a brief survey on the needs of unrepresented SNF residents who lack decision-making capacity. Responses are requested by Jan. 28.
DHCS Announces Flexibility on Medi-Cal Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Requirements
The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has announced temporary regulatory flexibility for the amount of therapy required for Medi-Cal beneficiaries admitted for inpatient acute rehabilitation services, or 18 hours of therapy per week.

In a letter to governors dated Jan. 22, Acting Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Norris Cochran indicated the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) will likely last through 2021.
President Issues Executive Orders to Address COVID-19 Pandemic
On Jan. 21, President Biden issued additional executive orders and directives instructing various federal agencies to take specific actions to address the COVID-19 pandemic, including expanding testing and vaccination capacity, increasing personal protective equipment (PPE) and other necessary materials to combat the pandemic, slowing the spread of COVID-19, and addressing inequitable outcomes.
