CMS Resumes Laboratory Survey Activity

For compliance and laboratory staff

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced it will fully resume laboratory survey activity — as required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) — following a suspension in enforcement action during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE).

During the PHE, CLIA survey activity was limited to immediate jeopardy situations. Under the updated guidance, state survey agencies can perform all regulatory required on-site surveys, including complaint surveys, initial certification surveys, recertification surveys, validation surveys, revisits, and proficiency testing desk reviews.
