The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued the final rule for the home health prospective payment system (PPS) for calendar year (CY) 2022.

In addition to payment updates for home health and home infusion services, the rule finalizes a nationwide expansion of the home health Value-Based Purchasing Program and makes permanent certain changes to the Conditions of Participation (CoP) that were implemented during the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE).

This rule also finalizes changes to the home health, long-term care hospital, and inpatient rehabilitation facility quality reporting programs, establishing the start date for related data collection and implementation of new standardized patient assessment data elements on Oct. 1, 2022.

Additional notable provisions include revisions to the infection control requirements for skilled-nursing facilities that will extend the mandatory COVID-19 reporting requirements beyond the current COVID-19 PHE until Dec. 31, 2024, and updated survey and enforcement requirements for hospice programs.
