CHA Comments on Artificial Intelligence in Health Care

What’s happening: CHA responded to a request for information about the current state of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care from Rep. Ami Bera, MD, (D-CA-6).

What else to know: A copy of the letter was also shared with Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-CA-23) and Ted Lieu (D-CA-36), co-chairs of the bipartisan House taskforce on AI.

In the letter, CHA urged that regulation of AI in health care must be balanced with flexibility that will continue to encourage innovation. CHA shared that many hospitals and health systems have embraced the “FAVES” principles — that AI should lead to health care outcomes that are fair, appropriate, valid, effective, and safe — and that hospitals also support transparency as algorithms are developed, combined with periodic audits to identify potential bias and prevent harm. CHA also discussed how AI has the potential to transform and improve the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient health care.
