CEO Message: Standing Up for Black Moms and Babies

This week, the nation pauses to recognize, reflect upon, and respond to a crisis centuries in the making: The fact that the United States has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world, driven by the sad and unacceptable mortality rates among Black mothers, who are 2.5 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. 

Black Maternal Health Week, held annually in the middle of National Minority Health Month, presents a notable opportunity to not only take stock of where California sits in the efforts to reduce maternal health disparities, but also to listen and learn from the people who are suffering, including the most vulnerable: Black infants in the United States die at more than twice the rate of white infants.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the many passionate volunteers who donate their time, offer their talents, share their skills, and provide vital support to causes they care about in their hospital and community. This year’s annual week of recognition is April 18-24.

This post has been archived and contains information that may be out of date.The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has announced the availability of web-based training on conducting a standardized cognitive assessment and the Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) for inpatient rehabilitation facility providers. The training includes interactive exercises to test knowledge related to the assessment and coding of the BIMS.  

CHA Updates COVID-19 Data Reporting Guidance

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently updated its COVID-19 data reporting requirements, and these changes were incorporated into the CHA Tracker on March 31.  

CHA worked with the California Department of Public Health and HHS to update the data reporting guidance* to offer a fuller explanation on how to record data for these updated fields. The following updates to the data reporting guidance were made:

President Biden Releases 2022 Discretionary Budget Request

On April 9, President Biden submitted his $1.2 trillion discretionary spending budget to Congress for federal fiscal year (FY) 2022. Of the amount, $769 billion is requested for non-defense spending, a 16% increase from the prior year. The budget request includes a 23% increase in spending for the Department of Health and Human Services ($132 billion requested) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the largest budget increase in nearly two decades ($8.7 billion requested).
