SACRAMENTO (April 19, 2022) — Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, California hospitals continue to face massive financial losses, with the 2021 shortfall triple initial projections, according to a new report by Kaufman Hall, a nationally respected consulting firm with extensive health care expertise. These losses mean that for the first time in recent history, more than half of California’s hospitals are now operating in the red — losing money on the patients they care for.

While there is cause for some optimism related to the COVID-19 crisis — vaccines have been approved for children 5-11 and the summer surge is finally behind us — it remains a daily struggle for many of California’s hospitals to make sure they have the resources needed to deliver the care their patients deserve.

Judicial Advocacy for Hospitals
In addition to its federal and state legislative and regulatory advocacy, CHA also advocates for hospitals through the judicial system by filing amicus (“friend of the court”) briefs in cases that may potentially have a broad impact on hospitals and health systems. Amicus briefs allow CHA to provide important factual context and legal analysis from hospitals’ perspectives.
