Health Care Minimum Wage Increases Took Effect July 1

What’s happening: On July 1, the minimum wage for employees of certain hospitals increased per Senate Bill (SB) 525 (2023) and SB 159 (2024).

What else to know: The California Labor Commissioner also updated the health care supplemental minimum wage notice that hospitals must post alongside the general minimum wage order.

The July 1 health care minimum wage rate increases are as follows:

  • Hospitals or integrated health systems with 10,000 employees: from $23 per hour to $24 per hour
  • Dialysis clinics: from $23 per hour to $24 per hour
  • Safety-net hospitals: from $18 per hour to $18.63 per hour
  • Covered health care facilities run by large counties (more than 5 million people as of Jan. 1, 2023): from $23 per hour to $24 per hour
  • Covered health care facilities run by small counties (fewer than 250,000 people as of Jan. 1, 2023): from $18 per hour to $18.63 per hour

The minimum wage did not increase for intermittent, community, rural health, or related urgent care clinics; medium-sized community-based health care facilities; or any other covered facilities not listed and not operated by counties.
