Five California Teaching Hospitals Awarded Additional Residency Slots

What’s Happening: New graduate medical education (GME) residency slots have been allotted to teaching hospitals serving geographic areas and underserved populations.  

What Else to Know: Applications for the third round of residency positions will open in January and close March 31.   

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services awarded 200 GME residency positions in its second round of allotment under Section 126 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) of 2021. Section 126 of the CAA authorized 1,000 new Medicare-funded residency positions phased in at no more than 200 slots per year, starting in federal fiscal year 2023. Out of 100 hospitals, five California hospitals were awarded additional slots.
