The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has renewed the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) declaration for an additional 90 days, effective April 16.

The 90-day renewal puts the PHE in effect through July 15 and ensures flexibilities like space waivers and special rules for telehealth tied to the declaration remain in place for providers. HHS also confirmed that it will provide states with at least 60 days notice prior to the termination or expiration of the PHE in the future.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) last week announced the termination of certain waivers for nursing homes prior to the end of the PHE. The waivers will end on either April 7 or June 6, as specified in CMS’ guidance.
