On Jan. 11, the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) released Behavioral Health Information Notice No: 21-003 on the implementation of Assembly Bill (AB) 3242, which took effect on Jan. 1.

AB 3242, which was a CHA/National Alliance on Mental Illness CA co-sponsored bill in 2020, permits the use of telehealth for the required examination, assessment, or evaluation of individuals placed on involuntary holds in hospitals and their emergency departments.

DHCS recommends that providers review the new and amended W&I Code sections to ensure compliance and note important changes in the law.
