The Department of Health Care Services will allow public and private hospitals caring for Medi-Cal Fee-for-Service beneficiaries to request COVID-19-related Acute Administrative Day (AAD) reimbursement. This allowance will be retroactive to March 18, 2020, and will extend through the duration of the declared public health emergency.
Reimbursement for AADs will require an understanding of which patients qualify and documentation detailing the COVID-19 clinical course, specific coding and roadblocks to patient placement. For most hospitals, a Treatment Authorization Request will also be required prior to billing.
