CMS to Pay for COVID-19 Booster Shots

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has announced will pay the full cost of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster shots to providers without cost-sharing for Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program beneficiaries.  

The announcement follows the interim guidance issued on Sept. 24 by the by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommending boosters six months after a completed Pfizer vaccine regimen for individuals: 

  • Ages 65 and older and residents in long-term care settings 
  • Ages 50-64 with underlying medical conditions 
  • Ages 18-49 with underlying medical conditions 
  • Ages 18-64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting
