In May, the chairman of the House Committee on Energy & Commerce and Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions formally requested information on how Congress should develop a public health insurance option. CHA submitted comments in response to the request for information.

In the letter, while CHA agrees with the importance of accessible, affordable, quality health care for all, creating a public option is not the solution. CHA calls for the strengthening the Affordable Care Act and bolstering its coverage expansion provisions. CHA also highlights the role of value-based and other alternate payment agreements that provide high-quality and cost-efficient care, which promote value in the health care system to bring down costs for patients.

Additionally, CHA emphasizes that as the country rebuilds from the COVID- 19 pandemic and as cases begin to surge again, the focus must be on rebuilding the health care and public health delivery systems.
