In a follow-up to the July 26, public health order addressing unvaccinated workers in high-risk settings, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued updated guidance to skilled-nursing facilities (SNFs).

All Facilities Letter (AFL) 21–28 requires SNFs to develop and implement processes for verifying the vaccination status of all health care personnel, and requirements for testing and additional personal protective equipment for unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated health care personnel. These requirements are effective Aug. 9 and should begin as soon as reasonably possible, with full compliance no later than Aug. 23.

AFL 20-53.5 updates and clarifies recommendations from CDPH regarding screening testing for SNF health care personnel based on individual vaccination status and the SNF’s percentage of residents and health care personnel that are fully vaccinated.
