Urge Gov. Newsom to Sign Seismic Extension Bill

ACTION NEEDED

Please write a letter urging Gov. Newsom to sign Senate Bill (SB) 1432 (Caballero, D-Merced) using this letter template by Sept. 6.

It’s critical that we understand which organizations have submitted letters and make sure they make their way to the governor. CHA will bundle and send your letters each day as they come in — please submit your letters to Emily Schroeder, legislative assistant, at eschroeder@calhospital.org by Sept. 6.

The volume of letters is important, so we are asking all health systems to have each of their individual hospitals send their own letters, signed by each site’s CEO.

CHA has also developed a sample letter for community partners. It is critical that hospitals ask their non-hospital partners to support a signature.

BACKGROUND

With SB 1432 passing out of the Legislature last week, the governor now has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the legislation. He could act quickly, so your immediate attention to this issue is needed.

The administration has indicated concerns with a five-year extension to meet 2030 seismic requirements (at the discretion of the Department of Health Care Access and Information). A strong showing from hospitals and community partners will be key to getting this bill over the finish line.
