Action needed:

Call your state senators and assembly members and urge them to adopt a proposal through this year’s state budget process that would refocus 2030 hospital seismic requirements on emergency services and provide additional time for hospitals to comply as they begin the long recovery from the impact of the pandemic.

CHA has created a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document to better support your outreach.

Timing:

Call as soon as possible. This proposal could be acted on as early as next week (week of July 12), as legislators work to conclude business before adjourning July 16 or sooner for summer recess.

Find contact information for both your assembly member and senator on the state Legislature’s site.

Background:

Last month, CHA issued an Alert asking hospital leaders to contact legislators. Recognizing that the budget process is fluid, CHA this weekend created a new FAQ document to address head on the questions that are coming up. These include how hospital buildings have already met the stay standing requirement, that this outdated law is based on 1990s data and science, and more.

Additional resources on this topic can be found in the previous Alert, including:

Contact your state senators and assembly members and urge them to vote YES on trailer bill legislation that would modernize the 2030 seismic standard by refocusing the requirement on emergency services and allowing hospitals additional time to comply.
