Attorney General Releases Consumer Alert On Charity Care Law

This post has been archived and contains information that may be out of date.

On June 14, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a consumer alert regarding hospital charity care policies.

Hospitals will also receive a letter from the attorney general via email and U.S. mail to remind them of their charity care obligations and 2021 amendments to the charity care law in Assembly Bills 532 and 1020.

As a reminder, hospitals must provide written notice to patients of the availability of charity care and how to apply. CHA has compiled resources , including FAQs, to assist members. CHA’s 2022 Compliance Manual, available free online to CHA members, has been updated to reflect the most recent changes to California’s charity care laws.
