White House Considers Mandatory Rate Disclosure

For CEOs, Government Relations Executives

The Trump administration is considering mandating insurers to disclose their negotiated rates for hospital services. This follows a proposal earlier this year that would require hospitals and physicians to inform patients of the full cost of care prior to care being administered.

The administration believes these proposals can be implemented by utilizing hospital payment rules under Medicare or through the U.S. Department of Labor via the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.

These actions are being considered at a time when both California and the federal government are weighing proposals to eliminate the practices of “surprise” and “balance” billing.
