Reflection, Contemplation, and Gratitude

“We all get the exact same 365 days. The only difference is what we do with them.” — Hillary DePiano

Over the next two weeks, our nation will slow its pace for a brief moment as we celebrate the winter holidays.

Our shared December traditions mark common experiences and continuity, year after year. They help keep us grounded in the fact that no matter what the past 365 days have thrown our way, there is always an opportunity to start fresh, to think differently.

There’s something magical about this moment in time — of course we can do any of these things at any point — but this month in particular calls out for reflection, contemplation, and gratitude.

Reflecting on the challenges of the past year bring to mind the human condition that we value things more when they are difficult to obtain. Study after study has shown that people derive greater meaning from their lives when they are challenged; easy rewards are not fulfilling. Here at CHA, your team sees the challenges before us as opportunities to overcome, to deliver for you, our members, so your load is lighter.

Contemplating the issues that lie ahead of us, we know 2026 will not be easy; the nation is divided, hospitals are distressed, and the work you do to care for others is at risk. In turn, our resolve to support you has never been stronger. We are here, with you, for the hard work. Indeed, it is our privilege and our responsibility.

Finally, we thank you for your commitment to people in need. There isn’t a day that goes by that California hospitals don’t change lives for the better.

Your mission and your hearts drive what we at your association do every day on your behalf. And we thank you for your trust in us to serve you well.

Wishing all of you a happy and healthy holiday season filled with rest and peace.
