OIG Releases 2010 Work Plan

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has posted its fiscal year 2010 Work Plan. With respect to hospitals, OIG will focus on provider-based status for inpatient and outpatient facilities, non-physician outpatient services provided shortly before or during an inpatient stay, provider bad debts, reliability of hospital-reported quality measure data, present-on-admission coding, adverse events, outpatient observation, coding for Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Groups, Medicare and Medicaid disproportionate-share hospital payments, and payments to terminated/excluded providers.

OIG also will review security controls on portable devices containing protected health information, compliance with HIPAA privacy rules, breach notification compliance, and Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments for electronic health records.
