CMS Issues FFY 2021 Skilled-Nursing Facility PPS Proposed Rule

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued the federal fiscal year (FFY) 2021 proposed rule for the skilled-nursing facility (SNF) prospective payment system, which would update the Medicare payment rate and quality reporting programs. The provisions in the proposed rule, if finalized, would be effective Oct. 1, 2021.

CHA DataSuite has released hospital-specific 2020 Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act analyses. On March 27, Congress responded to the COVID-19 emergency by adopting the CARES Act, which provides financial relief and resources to hospitals impacted by the public health emergency.  

FDA Requests Removal of All Ranitidine Products From Market

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that manufacturers immediately withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine products from the market, due to a possible contaminant. Ranitidine products, commonly known by the brand name Zantac, will not be available for new or existing prescriptions or over-the-counter use in the United States.

CMS Announces 2021 Medicare Advantage and Part D Rate

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued the calendar year (CY) 2021 rate announcement, finalizing Medicare Advantage (MA) and Part D payment methodologies for CY 2021. CMS estimates a 1.66% payment increase for MA plans in 2021, compared to the 0.93% increase that had been proposed.

Seismic Safety Milestone Deadline Extensions for COVID-19 Response

The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) is granting extensions, upon request, to the construction milestones individual hospitals established with OSHPD as part of their 2020 seismic safety extensions. These extensions will be granted for hospitals that need additional time due to their response to COVID-19.

Congress Passes Sweeping COVID-19 Economic Relief Package

Last Wednesday, the U.S. Senate passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act; the House approved it on Friday, and it was quickly signed by the President. It is the third federal supplemental appropriations and legislative effort to address the COVID-19 outbreak and its economic impact. In addition to sweeping economic relief, the legislation includes several measures of importance to the hospital community. The American Hospital Association has issued a summary of the major provisions.

DHCS Releases Hospital-Directed Payment Encounter Data File

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has released three new hospital-directed payment data sets, available via the Secure File Transfer Protocol site (the site is only intended for file transfers, and uploaded files will be deleted within 45 days).
