988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Launches
On July 16, the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline transitioned to 988 — an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 crisis care that allows individuals experiencing a suicide, mental health, or substance use crisis to call and chat, or text 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.
CMS Issues CY 2023 OPPS Proposed Rule
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its calendar year (CY) 2023 outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) proposed rule on July 15. CMS estimates that Medicare expenditures under the OPPS will increase by $6.2 billion relative to estimated current year payments, based on changes in the proposed rule.
Federal Public Health Emergency Extended Until Mid-October
On July 15, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) renewed the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) declaration for another 90 days, extending it until Oct. 13.

Order Waives Restrictions on Pharmacists Independently Initiating and Furnishing Paxlovid to Individual Patients
On July 6, the Food and Drug Administration amended the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Paxlovid, an orally administered COVID-19 therapeutic drug. The amended EUA expressly permits licensed pharmacists to independently order Paxlovid for individual patients under certain conditions.
AHA Calls for Examples of Hospitals’ Community Impact
