SB 503 (Weber Pierson, D-San Diego) Details
Passed the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee on July 16. To be heard in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
SB 503 would require that health care providers make reasonable efforts to identify when patient care decision support tools use input variables that reflect protected characteristics, as well as mitigate any potential risk of discrimination that could result from the use of those tools. This is already required by federal law. The bill was amended July 17 to require that developers annually submit their artificial intelligence systems to an independent third-party compliance auditor starting in 2030. Due to the lack of auditors and audit standards, as well as costs that would be passed on to deployers, CHA has removed its support and is reevaluating its position.
