What’s happening: Key Republican members of Congress, led by Rep. David Valadao (R-CA 22), sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) vowing to oppose the Senate’s version of the reconciliation bill if its Medicaid cuts go beyond those in the House bill (H.R.1, One Big Beautiful Bill Act).
What else to know: At the same time, CHA continues to press members of Congress to protect Medicaid, including through an alert as well as a digital media campaign, both of which target Republican districts.
The letter, which was also signed by Young Kim (R-CA 40) and more than a dozen House GOP members, was in response to draft language from the Senate Finance Committee that proposes deeper Medicaid cuts, including reductions to provider taxes and state directed payments, that far exceed the proposed cuts in the House bill. The Senate is expected to act on its version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act as early as the end of this week.
CHA’s alert encourages hospitals in Republican districts to reach out to their representatives immediately, asking that they oppose these cuts and ensure hospitals have adequate time to adjust to any changes made in the final legislation. Additionally, CHA’s digital media campaign is running in Reps. Valadao, Kim, Obernolte (R-CA 23), and Fong’s (R-CA 20) districts. In the past week, these ads have garnered nearly a million views.
