HCAI to Hold Webinar on 2030 Seismic Water Storage Requirements

This post has been archived and contains information that may be out of date.

The Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) will hold a webinar on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon (PT) on the water storage required by the 2030 seismic building standards.

This requirement is known as Nonstructural Performance Category (NPC)-5. Hospitals are required under current state regulations to submit an evaluation to HCAI by Jan. 1, 2024, for how they plan to meet this and other NPC requirements by Jan. 1, 2030.

The webinar will cover Version 2.0 of this guidance, a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) checklist, a discussion on potable and industrial water and wastewater, insights from ongoing evaluations, and frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Recently, CDPH released All Facilities Letter 23-21, which outlines this existing requirement and provides recommendations for hospitals to consider. Hospitals will submit these evaluations to HCAI, which will coordinate its review with CDPH.

Previously, HCAI released Version 1.0 of its Advisory Guide A5 – NPC-5 Water Rationing Plan for Hospital Facilities. It is anticipated that HCAI will update this guidance to add FAQs to its website and release it as Version 2.0.

HCAI encourages hospitals with questions about this requirement to contact its Seismic Compliance Unit at seismiccomplianceunit@hcai.ca.gov
