As a reminder, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has published Version 4.0 of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI) manual, which takes effect on Oct. 1.

In addition to the new reporting form, CMS has issued an updated manual and change table that outlines the current revisions. The expanded IRF-PAI includes implementation of several new required data elements, including standardized patient assessment data elements.

The IRF-PAI is the assessment instrument that IRF providers use to collect patient assessment data for quality measure calculation and payment determination in accordance with the IRF Quality Reporting Program. Completion of the IRF-PAI is required for each Medicare Part A fee-for-service and Medicare Part C patient discharged from an inpatient rehabilitation facility.
