CMS Issues Updated Guidance for Dialysis in SNFs

This post has been archived and contains information that may be out of date.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued guidance regarding the delivery of home dialysis services by certified end-stage renal disease (ESRD) providers in a skilled-nursing facility (SNF).

The current guidance updates guidance issued in 2018 and was developed in response to questions and feedback from state survey agencies, dialysis providers, and other stakeholders.  The publication includes an advance copy of survey procedures.

As noted in the memorandum, residents of SNFs may access chronic dialysis treatments by being transported from the SNF to a certified ESRD facility, or via home dialysis in the SNF under the auspices of a written agreement between the SNF and the ESRD facility.  The current guidance addresses oversight for dialysis provided in nursing facilities, including required policies and procedures, and elements of a written agreement between the ESRD provider and the nursing home.
