CHA DataSuite has released a hospital-specific Medicare spending per beneficiary report (MSPB), that compares fee-for-service Medicare average spending per beneficiary at hospital/state/U.S. levels. The report, which is designed in the business intelligence platform, also shows a three-year MSPB trend (2019; July 1-Dec. 31, 2020; and 2021).
MSPB is a price standardized, non-risk-adjusted measure designed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to evaluate a hospital’s efficiency — as measured by program spending. This report compares the average Medicare spending per beneficiary for the hospital to state and U.S. benchmarks, using the following three time periods:
- One to three days prior to the index hospital admission
- During the index hospital admission
- One through 30 days after discharge from the index hospital admission
CHA Data Suite has provided a hospital’s risk-adjusted estimated MSPB amount at the bottom of the report. CMS utilizes this MSPB amount and the risk-adjusted national median MSPB amount to calculate the MSPB score in the value-based purchasing program.
