ACTION NEEDED
Urge your U.S. representative to vote no on proposed historic cuts to Medicaid that would deliver a devastating blow to Californians’ access to health care and to hospitals struggling to deliver vital health services.
Earlier today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed a proposal to cut more than $715 billion over 10 years from Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California). A House floor vote on the proposal is expected next week.
Find your U.S. representative’s contact information in this online directory. Contact information for each office is available here.
TIMING
Call or email your representatives by Tuesday, May 20. CHA will hold a webinar on May 19 to review details of the proposal and preliminary modeling of the impact on hospitals (click to register), along with the impact of the proposed state budget revision released today.
RESOURCES
BACKGROUND
Because the Energy and Commerce Committee proposal is part of a legislative process known as budget reconciliation, it only includes provisions that either increase or decrease spending and requires just a simple majority to pass in the Senate (rather than the standard 60-vote threshold).
The Energy and Commerce Committee proposals are now headed to the House Budget Committee where they will be combined with tax and spending measures from other committees. The combined bill will then be brought to the House floor for a vote.
While the timing of Senate consideration is uncertain, leadership has set a July 4 target to get the measure to President Trump’s desk.
It is critical that your representative understands the vital role Medicare and Medicaid play in supporting your patients and your hospital. Share your hospital’s story now and tell Congress to protect access to care for all Californians.
