Board of Pharmacy Updates Guidance for Compounding Drug Preparations

For COOs, pharmacy staff, licensing & certification staff

The California Board of Pharmacy released an informational statement this week intended to give compounding pharmacies some direction in light of the United States Pharmacopeia’s (USP) revised and new chapters, which have been delayed.

Following appeals from a number of pharmacist groups, the official dates of the revised chapters 795 and 797 and the new chapter 825 have been postponed until further notice.

In the meantime, the board encourages licensees to continue their transition to the proposed USP requirements and, at CHA’s request, has added, “While the USP appeals are under consideration, where physical construction or alteration is not yet complete, the board will consider mitigation, including a licensee’s efforts to achieve compliance.”
