As part of its efforts to mitigate the disruption to the supply of IV solutions after Hurricane Helene temporarily closed its North Cove, N.C., manufacturing plant, Baxter today said that it is now authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend the use date of some products to provide a 24-month expiration from the manufacture date without relabeling the products. In a letter to customers today, Baxter said the extended expiration date is based on Baxter’s submission to the FDA including container closure integrity data, container functional performance data, and an analysis of product weight loss profiles for those certain product codes.
Please see the Baxter document that contains the full list of Baxter product codes, lot/serial numbers, labeled expiration dates, and extended expiration dates. The extended expiration dates apply only to product codes manufactured prior to Sept. 30, 2024.
NEW AHA PODCAST ON CONSERVATION STRATEGIES
As part of our efforts to continue to share conservation strategies with the field, the AHA today released a new podcast featuring a conversation with AHA Chief Physician Executive Chris DeRienzo, M.D., and Mark Taylor, M.D., surgical director for surgical operations at Cleveland Clinic. They discuss the health system’s ongoing IV fluid conservation strategies and the importance of constant and targeted communication during supply chain shortages.
Please visit AHA’s webpage for more information on the situation, including links to other conservation resources.
BACKGROUND
The AHA is continuing efforts on multiple fronts to provide updates and assist members related to the supply chain issues resulting from the temporary closure of a Baxter manufacturing plant in North Carolina due to damage from Hurricane Helene. The plant had manufactured approximately 60% — or 1.5 million bags — of the IV solutions used every day in the U.S.
