Appropriate Use Criteria Payment Penalties Indefinitely Delayed

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a notice indefinitely delaying the payment penalty period of the Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) Program for advanced imaging services.

The program was set to begin penalties on Jan. 1, 2023, for imaging claims that did not indicate the ordering physician’s consultation with clinical decision support tools. CMS says the program will continue operating under its educational and testing period. For additional information, visit CMS’ AUC resource page.
