The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released additional information about the enrollment process that is required for critical access hospitals and rural prospective payment system hospitals with 50 or fewer beds to convert to a Medicare rural emergency hospital (REH).
Hospitals wishing to convert will need to submit a change of information online via the Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System or a paper CMS-855A application to their Medicare administrative contractor.
Additional details on the REH model are available in CHA’s summaries of the calendar year 2022 and 2023 outpatient prospective payment system final rules.
Currently, the state of California does not provide a licensure for this type of hospital. However, CHA continues educating key stakeholders in the state about the need for this type of licensure model to ensure access to services in all communities.
