There’s now a strong understanding that social factors can have a greater impact on health and well-being than clinical care.This insight coupled with payment models that reward providers for keeping the populations they serve healthy has led some innovative health systems to address these social factors directly—investing in housing for homeless patients, opening food pantries or farmer’s markets to address food insecurity, creating medical-legal partnerships to assist patients under threat of eviction and promoting healthy development in their neighborhoods.

CHA Participates in FDA Drug Shortages Meeting

CHA this week attended a stakeholder meeting held by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the root cause of drug shortages. Ahead of the meeting, CHA submitted a comment letter that identifies underlying systemic causes and makes recommendations to prevent or mitigate drug shortages.

Wanted to send a personal note to volunteers throughout California about Joan Cardellino, CAVS, who has decided to pursue opportunities outside of the California Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (CAHHS). Her last day with us was November 13. As many of you know, Joan is a life-long servant leader and, for more than 13 years, directed her passion toward elevating the role of volunteers in California’s hospitals. We thank Joan for all she has contributed to volunteer services, and wish her the best.

CMS Expands Site-Neutral Payment Policy in CY 2019 OPPS Final Rule

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its final rule updating the outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) for calendar year (CY) 2019, which also includes payment updates for ambulatory surgical centers. Despite strong opposition from CHA and the hospital field, CMS finalized an expansion of its site-neutral payment policies.

CMS Issues CY 2019 Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) yesterday released its final rule updating the Medicare physician fee schedule (PFS) and other Medicare Part B payment policies for calendar year (CY) 2019. The final rule includes a number of significant proposals that will impact hospitals and clinicians. Included in the PFS final rule is an interim final rule that implements provisions of the recently signed Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act.
