DHCS to Reduce Disproportionate Share Hospital Payments

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has announced it will reduce disproportionate share hospital (DSH) funding, which has been delayed since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. DSH cuts are currently scheduled to take effect for federal fiscal year (FFY) 2020 after May 23.

CHA President & CEO Carmela Coyle has been appointed to a new statewide Behavioral Health Task Force, which was announced last week by the California Health and Human Services Agency. The task force will advise Gov. Newsom’s administration on its efforts to advance statewide behavioral health services, prevention, and early intervention.

Much progress has been made in patient safety — between 2009 and 2019, the annual number of errors serious enough to warrant monetary penalties from the California Department of Public Health declined 27% — but more can be done. In recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 8-14, the Hospital Quality Institute (HQI) and CHPSO will offer five free webinars focused on improving the safety of the health care system and recognizing the work that’s being done.

CMS Approves 2019-21 Hospital Fee Program

Earlier this week, the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) approved the final components of the 2019-21 Hospital Fee Program package, which were submitted on Sept. 30, 2019. This approval comes after much hard work, negotiation, and collaboration between CHA, our constituent hospital associations, and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).
