Yesterday, CHA issued a news release on Gov. Newsom’s revised 2019-20 state budget. CHA applauds the Governor for making investments that improve Californians’ health and well-being, including: ongoing support for expanding Medi-Cal coverage to young adults, regardless of immigration status; imposing a state-level individual coverage mandate; broader premium subsidies for low and middle-income families; and significant investments in behavioral health.

Editorial: Let’s open the books on Medicare Advantage

The insurance industry’s counter to Medicare for All is Medicare Advantage, the privately run plans that already serve 22 million seniors or more than a third of beneficiaries.

That number will only grow in the years ahead as the next generation of seniors, already comfortable with managed care through their workplace plans, age into the program. The Congressional Budget Office projects MA plan enrollment will grow to 42% of beneficiaries by 2028.

Commentary: We can all help increase diversity in nursing

I knew from a very young age that I wanted to become a healthcare professional. An anesthesiologist to be exact. I had the grades and I had the drive. However, as the youngest of seven to a single mother, I couldn’t afford medical school tuition. So, my high school guidance counselor encouraged me to enroll in a licensed practical nurse course—a decision that changed my life. Six months into the program, nursing became my passion.

I am an African-American man, standing 6 feet, 6 inches tall. It’s probably safe to assume that I don’t look like what most people might consider your stereotypical nurse. While statistics on demographics in the nursing workforce vary, they do reveal that the profession is considerably lacking representation across race, ethnicity and gender.

Governor’s Revised State Budget Makes Important Coverage Investments, But Fails to Include Vital Medi-Cal Funding

This post has been archived and contains information that may be out of date.

SACRAMENTO (May 9, 2019) — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s revised 2019-20 state budget makes many important investments to improve the health and well-being of all Californians including:

Ongoing support for expanding Medi-Cal coverage to young adults through age 25, regardless of immigration status

A deeper and broader expansion of premium subsidies to make coverage more affordable for low- and middle-income families

Continued support for imposing a state-level individual mandate for obtaining coverage

Significant investments in behavioral health

“Having access to health care is as essential as food, water and air, regardless of where you are born,” said Carmela Coyle, President & CEO of the California Hospital Association. “We applaud the Governor’s continued work toward ensuring that all Californians have access to the health care they need when they need it.”

At the same time, Coyle added, the revised budget proposal fails to include important, voter-approved Proposition 55 funding for the Medi-Cal program.

“When Proposition 55 was enacted in 2016, it was with the explicit promise to voters that up to $2 billion a year would be used to strengthen access to care for children and families covered by Medi-Cal,” Coyle said. “Yet, despite a $21.5 billion surplus, the Governor’s revised budget doesn’t include any of this funding. Legislators can — and must — do better for our kids and families.”

The high cost, low quality and systemic inequities of the U.S. healthcare system have been the impetus for its redesign. Our healthcare system is now controlled by Consolidated Healthcare institutions, Insurance companies, Pharmaceutical companies and Health Information Technology companies (CHIPHIT complex). The CHIPHIT complex, along with the Federal Government, will create and control our future healthcare system.
