2024 Disaster Conference
This presentation prepares newer disaster planners with exercise drill skills. It provides exercise regulatory information from The Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, design strategies, and planning considerations for various types of disaster exercises. Newer exercise design planners will become more disaster resilient while understanding how to effectively evaluate and document an EP exercise to meet their requirements. This session provides best practice information and the tools for post-disaster exercise meetings, forms, documentation, and after-action/process improvement.
Hospitals are frequently targets for cyber and social engineering scams following disasters. Hospitals can mitigate their risk by recognizing and preventing cyber threats, phishing emails, ransomware attacks, and fraudulent fundraising campaigns.
Following the Loma Prieta earthquake, patients’ access to care was severely impacted by temporary closure of several dialysis facilities. These closures demonstrated an obvious need for additional disaster preparedness for dialysis facilities.
Shared by Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, this reference aims to assist hospital emergency managers prepare, plan and conduct exercises and training with local Access and Functional Needs (AFN) communities. Funded through a grant from the California Community Foundation, the tool was developed for use by emergency management professionals in the health care industry.

The growing population of older adults in the United States with complex medical conditions are typically the most severely impacted by large-scale weather and climate disasters. A health care systems’ ability to leverage technology and optimize limited resources during an emergency is universal. Join us to learn how the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) established the Vulnerable Patient Care, Access, and Response in Emergencies (VP CARE) Program to provide standardized data tools and guidance to assist medical facilities with conducting outreach and care coordination to vulnerable Veteran populations during major emergencies
National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) members respond to calls for help. National VOAD is an association of organizations that mitigate and alleviate the impact of disasters, provides a forum promoting cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration; and fosters more effective delivery of services to communities affected by disaster.
This core competencies list provides the disaster preparedness and response knowledge, skills and abilities needed by relevant types of hospital personnel given the current state of the art of CBRNE hazards and health care system vulnerabilities. Applying these competencies will assist hospitals in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of disaster preparedness and response training programs.
This assessment tool was developed to assist hospitals in revising and updating existing disaster plans or in the development of new plans. The world has been so focused on COVID-19 that it seems summer, and wildfire season, snuck up on us. Responding to wildfires in the midst of a pandemic is another example of how important it is for health care personnel and communities to work together. Preparing and thinking outside the box when it comes to wildfires while dealing with a community spread pandemic helps improve our response.
